Jewelry that reflects the beauty within
Artist Statement
I love to work in series, focusing on different aspects of life and what inspires me at any given time. Using silver, stones (Turquoise, Amethyst, Kyanite, Peridot, Tourmaline), and some enameling, for example, the ‘Leaf Series’ is inspired by Spring, and what it brings to the spirit: new growth, beginnings, potential, and the simple beauty of forms in nature. On a spiritual level it speaks to expressions of deeper emotions of promise and hope, feelings that I could not express using other materials.
Besides jewelry, I also create personal altars, copper clocks, copper-covered blank books, and bookmarks of silver, copper, or brass. Although most of my work is individually made and hand cut, designed and produced, I have chosen to professionally cast components of some my pieces which allows me to have more time to be creative and uncover new designs. My sterling silver jewelry tends to have an organic feel, many pieces having a distinctive oxidized finish that adds an unpredictable wash of gold, red, pink, and blue-black, making each piece unique.
As with all my work, this has been a journey of discovery and trust in my own vision. My work may be representational, but underneath the obvious image is a message—to be felt and interpreted by each individual. Besides being adornments, the pieces are meant to speak to the spirit and remind us of what may be an important personal goal, or some inner quality we may want to nurture in ourselves.
Artist Biography
I have always worked with my hands, from doing carpentry as a child with my father, to drawing, painting, knitting, and other crafts. An adult-education class introduced me to silversmithing, where I found that working with the metals and the tools felt like second nature to me.
At first I just created for myself then I was making gifts for all my friends. Soon the encouragement I received sent me out into the world of craft fairs and I was eventually invited to show my work at a number of local galleries and shows.
While enjoying creating, I have also been teaching silversmithing for several years.
Also, in 2002 I joined with four other artists to open a gallery in Natick Center, Five Crows. The gallery currently represents over 100 artists, the majority of which are local.
I value that there are so many facets to what has become my work and my passion. I feel blessed to be able to do, and share, what I love in these ways.
May each day bring unexpected joy,
May you be happy and peaceful of heart |
